"Uprising"[title 1] is the 9th episode of the second season of ABC Family's Switched at Birth, and it is thirty-ninth episode of series overall. It was written by Lizzy Weiss and it was directed by Steve Miner. It was originally aired on March 4th, 2013.

Plot

In this episode--told all in American Sign Language--Daphne, Emmett, Travis and their Carlton friends plan a protest to convince the school board to keep Carlton open. Bay is conflicted about whose side she is on since the Carlton kids want to disband the pilot program and keep Carlton 100% deaf. Ultimately, Bay joins the sit-in, even providing her artwork for the movement. Emmett catches Daphne and Noah sharing an intimate moment while rehearsing for the school play. The Kennishes and Regina are concerned about their daughters' involvement in the sit-in. Meanwhile, Melody has to pick which side she’s on since the school board has offered her a new position if she outwardly supports the closing of Carlton.

Trivia

  • This episode has no audio beyond music and the actors say all their lines in ASL. The entire point is to give hearing people a taste of being deaf.
  • This episode received many complaints about lack of audio and sounds that they have to reply on reading the subtitle or closed caption.

Goofs

  • When Daphne walks up to Noah and tells him her hearing aid battery died his locker is open. When he hands her new ones it is closed. He is in frame the entire time he is not seen closing it.
